Year 6
Our new IPC topic for Spring 1 is 900 CE where we will be exploring three non-European ancient civilisations: The Ancient Maya, The Kingdom of Benin and the Islamic Empire. To find out more about what we will be learning during our IPC lessons, see below.
As Historians we will:
- Find out about The Maya from the buildings and artefacts they left behind
- Explore Maya religion and ceremonies
- Find out about The Maya writing and counting system
- Investigate possible reasons Mayans abandoned their cities
- Discover what Benin City in West Africa might have looked like
- Use different sources to find out about the Kingdom of Benin
- Learn how the Edo/Benin people celebrate and worship
- Deduce what happened to the Kingdom of Benin
- Research the spread of the Islamic Empire and why it declined
- Look at the achievements and inventions of the Golden Age of Islam

This half term we will be starting our new text ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian where we will:
- Use a range of vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure to convey character
- Write descriptions of settings conveying mood and atmosphere
- Use semi-colons and dashes to mark boundaries between clauses
- Write narratives and developing character through realistic dialogue
Maths
We are continuing to work extremely hard in our maths lesson and will be focusing on the following areas this term:
- Developing our strategies to solve ratio problems
- Exploring algebra by forming expressions and creating formulae
- Expanding our understanding of decimals
- Investigating the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages
- Applying understanding of percentages to solve a variety of challenges
